VARIOUS CLUBS by Mrs Renee Saldanha

VARIOUS CLUBS

St. Joseph’s P.U. College has a variety of clubs beyond the school curriculum.  Clubs offer important life skills that students can use for the rest of their lives.  When a student joins a club and actively participates in its activities, his/her communicative skills improve.  Besides, these activities teach leadership and team spirit.  Clubs also host a variety of competitions in order to develop the hidden talents.

Eco – Club

The Eco – Club plays an important role in creating environmental awareness among students.  The objective of this club is to motivate the students to keep their surroundings green and clean by undertaking the plantation of different saplings ;  to promote the thought of conservation of water ;  to create/foster critical thinking on environmental safety and security and also to develop practical and sensible approach to environmental degradation.

So throughout the year members of this club maintain cleanliness in the school premises.  They conducted a Rain-Harvesting programme as a technique of water conservation and planted different saplings on the event of Vanamahotsava.  They took care to water and manure these plants throughout the year.

Literary Club

The Literary Club has been introduced to tap the effective communicative skills and also to bring to light the hidden talents of the students.  The Literary Club fosters love for language, develops literary creativity and provides avenues for self-expression beyong the acadenic curriculum.

Active members of this club comprise both school and college students.  They participate in all the programmes organized by the core committee members of the club.  The Literary Club initiated competitions like debate, elocution, essay writing, poetry and extempore speaking.  These competitions encourage students to develop a taste for literature and to improve their written and spoken language.

Commerce Club

In order to meet the challenging needs of corporate world environment, it is not sufficient for a student of Commerce to be sound just theoretically, but must also be exposed to the outer world in a dynamic way to face practical situations.  So, in order to carry out the purpose, the Commerce Club was started by the late Sir Rohan Mendonca.  The lecturers who take up Commerce continued it.  This club enriches and empowers the students with academic and technical excellence.

Activities of the Club

Group discussions on given topics such as marketing, advertisement, etc
Industrial visit
Debate
Power Point Presentation
Business Quiz

Most of the Commerce students actively take part in this club where they improve their communication skills, their personalities and attitude

Laboratory

With the objective of social service, and to provide value-based quality education to rural students, the Christian Brothers introduced the Science course in the P.U.C.  in the year  1996.  Since then St. Joseph’s P.U. College has made  remarkable progress in the field of education.

Science is a practical subject, the teaching of which cannot be done properly in theory form alone.  It is necessary to conduct various kinds of experimental works which are practical in nature.  So, to carry out the Science teaching process effectively, the management established four labs :  Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science.  The labs are spacious, well ventilated and well-equipped.  Here, various scientific apparatus and equipment is arranged in a systematic manner.

Every day, Science students visit the laboratory during their practical hour.  The lecturers guide the students in handling various apparatus and to think independently.  Science practicals raise their level of self-confidence and develop scientific attitude among students.  At the end of the term, the student’s practical ability is assessed through practical examination.  As a result, most students realize this is an opportunity to score high marks, and they do.

Library

The proper management of a library is a necessary part in the drive for the spread of education.  So, the Christian Brothers established a good library in order to develop a healthy reading habit among students.

The college library has a spacious reading room with a good collection of books, magazines, standard journals and all leading newspapers.  Altogether, there are more than  14,000  books on various topics.  The library also helps students to refer to topics related to their subjects.  Besides encouraging the students to develop the habit of reading, some assistance and supervision is helpful.  From class  VIII  to  II Yr P.U.C. the students are allotted one hour in a week as a library hour.  During this hour and also leisure time students visit the library and make the best use of the variety of books exhibited in the library to enrich their knowledge.  Reading books not only gives knowledge, but also develops self-discipline in students.

Our Librarian, Mr. Vijay, who recently passed away, was a lover of books.  He always advised and guided the students in the use of the library.  He worked wholeheartedly to raise the standard of the library by arranging the books in the way that they would benefit most.
