QUALITY EDUCATION AT ST. JOSEPH’S P.U. COLLEGE, BAJPE by Mrs Jacintha

QUALITY  EDUCATION  AT  ST.  JOSEPH’S  P.U. COLLEGE,  BAJPE

The Quality of Education decides the quality of a nation.

Primary education has been made a  Fundamental Right by the  93rd Amendment to the Indian Constitution.  So education has become every Indian’s right.  But Quality Education has become the privilege of a chosen few, especially the Urban masses, and  the Rich of India.

So what about the  Rural lot, and the  Middle and Poor classes ?  Don’t they have the Right to Quality Education ?

Of course they have !  But who will provide it . . . ?  And a solution to this problem came in the form of St. Joseph’s P.U. College at a rural place called Bajpe, in the year  1977, under the leadership of the Christian Brothers.  Now, after four decades of fruitful service, when the Brothers are moving out from here, let’s have a brief look at the facilities provided for Quality Education in this institution.

“Quality Education”, to put this term in simple language, we can say, is that education which enables and supports the development of talents, skills, character and personality of a child and makes him/her succeed in the world and sustain a family.

And I can swear that really our students at St. Joseph’s are lucky to get this education at this rural place and grow as  Responsible, Loyal  Citizens of India and as True Human Beings.  Let us see what is special here.

Let me begin with the magnificent campus.  It’s in a prime location, just a few metres from the main road.  As you enter,   St. Joseph’s P.U.College welcomes you with two big playgrounds, one on each side of an open air stage, right in front of the building, fully surrounded by big shady trees and the provision of stone benches all over, to sit and study, or just relax.  Anybody who enters this campus is lured by its peaceful, serene atmosphere and is tempted to stay.

About the courses offered  -  ours is an  Aided Kannada and English Medium High School with co-education.  At P.U.C. level, Science, Commerce and Arts courses are offered, with  14  and  18  qualified, experienced and dedicated teachers to guide, motivate and support the students at High School and P.U.C.  respectively.

I am proud to say that St. Joseph’s P.U.College is recognized at the State as well as National levels in sports and games.  Throughout the year our playgrounds are occupied for play, practising and coaching :  Football, Volleyball, Cricket, Badminton (shuttle and ball), Kho-Kho, Athletics  ..  ..  The support and motivation given by our Principal, P.T. teachers as well as parents have gone a long way in shaping careers of many athletes and players, who have brought laurels to St. Joseph’s.  There is a provision for Indoor games also.  And these facilities are the real magnets which attract students !

In academics, St. Joseph’s offers many complimentary facilities for studies, such as
-  a well equipped Computer lab with trained and dedicated teachers, catering to the needs of students to win in today’s competitive world
-  the Physics, Chemistry and Biology labs too are well equipped to impart practical knowledge to the students
-  the Library with a spacious, well-furnished Reading Room, is a real Treasure of Knowledge, and a favourite spot of frequent visits by the students as well as teachers
-  the provision for two Audio-Visual rooms is very helpful to both High School as well as  P.U.C.  which make learning interesting (and for the High School, this facility is used for the Teach Next programme also)

Our students are given ample opportunities to develop their talents, gain knowledge and develop a sense of co-operation and unity.  And they are :  the Science club, Eco club and Literature club.  Students participate with great enthusiasm in various activities conducted by them like competitions, quiz, exhibitions, ..  and the important thing is they take the initiative to organize the activities themselves.  National festivals and Days are celebrated, various co-curricular activities conducted throughout the year, like Essay, Elocution, Singing, Drawing competitions, Variety Entertainment programmes, Quiz and Extempore provide an opportunity to all the students to show their hidden talents and make use of their real potential.

Leadership blossoms in the Student Council and School Assemblies, where future leaders are bred.

The  YSM  at High School level provides yet another stage for showcasing the talents of children and developing leadership and team spirit.  The  N.C.C.  wing at the High School level with  100  girl and boy cadets, trains them to become Disciplined, Responsible and Patriotic Citizens and the future leaders of India.

The Annual Day, class picnics and House competitions bring a sense of togetherness and co-operation.  Because of the support and motivation our students get in the school, they willingly participate in Prathibha Karanji, Science Model Exhibition, Computer Quiz, and so on, at different levels, and win prizes.

Value Based Education is our priority at St. Joseph’s.  Our students have the golden opportunity to have one hour’s Value Education class weekly.  Career Guidance by experts is arranged both at High School and  P.U.C. level to help and guide the students in their future careers.

Charity is a part of our Motto.  Many deserving poor students are given fee exemption or concession every year, so that they should not be deprived of any opportunities snapped up by others.  The girls of Kannada Medium at High School level are exempted from paying any fees, mainly to make sure that they are provided quality education.

Regarding other facilities provided :   clean drinking water, canteen facility, clean and well-maintained toilets with continuous water supply.  The Government also sponsors (Bisiyoota) midday meals, Ksheera Bhagya, Vitamin tablets, and a bicycle for each student.

As a result of all these facilities and activities, the number of students clamouring for admission is increasing every year.  This should not be surprising.  Even the casual observer can notice the rapport between students and teachers.   “We are a Family”.   This bonding between students and teachers is so strong that students approach their teachers unhesitatingly, not only for matters that concern the subjects being taught, but for the weightier matters that life brings  -  and our teachers are there for them, always.  If the need of a professional counsellor is detected, this is arranged.

Thus St. Joseph’s Bajpe is a rural educational institution which is doing everything possible within reach to provide Quality Education to students.

It is our pleasure to see our students growing, making use of all these facilities and the conducive atmosphere, and bringing good results every year.  And our sincere wish is  “May our students grow academically, morally, economically, be Good and Responsible Citizens and Noble Leaders of our country, and an Asset to Human Society”

Mrs. Jacintha Cutinho
