THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT by Mrs Sumangala

THE  SCIENCE  DEPARTMENT

Science is a body of empirical, theoretical and practical knowledge about the natural world produced by scientists who emphasise the observation, explanation and prediction of the real world.  It provides satisfactory answers for countless questions that arise in our mind, in the form of easy experiments, projects, models ..  It provides creative learning and practical knowledge about the phenomena that we see in our daily life.

Until  1996  students from the areas surrounding Bajpe were deprived of science education after finishing school.  So with the intention of providing quality education, a discussion began at the time of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 1995, under the leadership of the Principal, Br. Conrad.  His ideas were executed by his successor, Br. Hector, and the rest is history.

Today, prospective students are offered three choices of subject combination :  PCMB, PCMS and  PCMC, which combine the foundational Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with the options of Biology, Statistics or Computer Science.  The laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science are spacious, well illuminated and well-equipped, with a ready water supply.  There is a healthy relationship between the lecturers and students.  The lecturers are not only experienced, with an ample amount of subject knowledge, but also caring, always ready to clarify things for students who require help, especially those with a less comfortable background.  And students on their part are perpetually ready to offer their services to help in various ways, like preparing solutions in Chemistry, arranging specimens and bringing raw materials of nature in Biology, resetting wires in Physics labs,  offering helpful software in  Computer Science ..  ..  enthusiastic ever.  The relationship is symbiotic, and the outcome is that all benefit ;  students who enter with an indifferent record often leave with something to be proud of.  Of course, the students will benefit from the rural reservation quota when they apply for engineering, medical and so on.  From the tentative  30  students who initiated the Science section, there are now sufficient numbers to merit a second section from  2014-15.

As a senior member of the faculty, I would like to commend the management  for being always ready to procure whatever equipment and consumable material that is required, without being deterred by cost.  It has been my good fortune to work in this institution.

Smt. Sumangala Bai,
Lecturer in Biology
